Unclassifiable (rare) 'Oh, Happy We' - A New ICANN Song
posted by michael on Monday April 15 2002, @05:05PM

Once again, into the ICANNWatch mailbox plops a gently mordant ICANN Song by the "Unknown Artist". This one is entitled Oh, Happy We, drawn from Candide, the story of a believer in the best of all possible worlds. If you missed either of the two earlier songs, here's another chance to enjoy the ICANN Monopoly Song, and the one that started it all, the original ICANN Song.

    Full lyrics inside...

Sung to the tune of "Oh, Happy We," from Candide

    CANDIDE

Our task is merely setting standards

And only when we all agree

    CUNEGONDE

We make the rules that all must follow

We're now in charge of net security

    CANDIDE

    Online meetings

    CUNEGONDE

    Lots of trips

    CANDIDE

    Drafts and papers

    CUNEGONDE

    Good Press Clips

    CANDIDE

Soon many friends will join our just cause

We'll help to make the net improve

    CUNEGONDE

Soon we'll add to our code of laws

No new domains unless we do approve

    CANDIDE

    True consensus

    CUNEGONDE

    Growing staff

    CANDIDE

    Good discussions

    CUNEGONDE

    Lots of laughs

Oh, how the governments will grovel when

They learn that we control the net

    CANDIDE

Users and registries will prosper, and

We will be happy that we met

    CUNEGONDE

    Regulations

    CANDIDE

    Harmony

    CUNEGONDE

    Strong enforcement

    CANDIDE

    Diversity

    CUNEGONDE

We'll travel and enjoy the freebies,

All will be pink champagne and gold.

    CANDIDE

We'll lead a simple and a free life

Doing what's right, not what we have been told.

    CUNEGONDE

    Growing power

    CANDIDE

    Postel's ghost

    CANDIDE

    I love ICANN

    CUNEGONDE

    Pass the roast.

    CUNEGONDE, CANDIDE

    Oh, happy pair!

    Oh, happy we!

    It's very rare

    How we agree!

PS. The turbulent history of the musical version of Voltaire's classic novel is much more fun than ICANN. Work on the adaptation involved at various times no less than Lillian Hellman, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Wilbur, Dorothy Parker. And the critics still hated it.

I wrote this over two years ago, but it can still be fun for those who know domain name history:

Is there any possibility to book the artists for a life performance at the Bucharest GA? [I'm serious.]
