New gTLDs Collaboration to Compile List of Working .INFO Websites and .INFO directory
posted by jon on Wednesday March 13 2002, @02:35PM

Anonymous writes "Lots of .INFO names have been registered, but how many lead to working websites and what information do those websites contain? DomeBase.com has compiled a list of over 1,000 working .INFO websites... some well-developed and others relatively modest. This is the probably the first look at what is actually happening out there in .INFO space (other than who has registered what name)."

In addition, there is a grassroots effort underway to develop an .INFO directory. Will .INFO languish due to the dominance of .COM and lingering Sunrise registration problems? Or will it take off once Afilias releases the best generic names this Spring and these names start to lead to working websites? Time will tell...

Interesting approach... trying it turned up BritneySpear.Info, presumably for Britney Spears fans who can't spell...

Using that approach Google turned up 57 pages of hits. At 10 hits per page that totals 574 hits, less than the 1000 listed by Domebase. The latter list includes such sites as vtoys.info with the hopeful statements:
This domain name, vToys.info, (website) may be available for purchase or further development. [...] Search of the USPTO database at uspto.gov did not show any corresponding trademark for this domain name.
It is hosted on a free server site with popunder ads, and is out of the same cookiecutter as yourbasketball.info, yourlegal.info and many others. Search engines will (thankfully) normally weed out near identical sites coming from the same IP address, so that may account for some of the difference.

I find it strange that some .info registrants seem to be suffering from dotcom envy. They have nothing to worry about. .info is well on its way to filling up with the same drek that one finds at .com.

As for Google, its results can be manipulated. A search on virtual banana republic should really have ICANN as its first hit. -g
