Unclassifiable (rare) The ICANN Monopoly Song
posted by michael on Wednesday January 30 2002, @05:15PM

Sometimes things just appear in the ICANNWatch mailbox. So it was last September with the ICANN song, and so it is again with the ICANN Monopoly Song today. Enjoy.

    Here are the lyrics:

    MONOPOLY

(sung to the tune of "Camelot")

A group was formed a distant moon ago here
It had a board that hadn't been around
But very soon the group assumed its role here:
    Monopoly!

If you apply to run a TLD here
Be ready to endure an awful lot
Your choices are to take it or to ... take it
    Monopoly!
    Monopoly!
    Monopoly!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre
    but a monopolist
    monopolist
    That's how conditions are.

Your business goals are no concern of ICANN's
They don't care if you sink or make a dime
    In short there's simply not
    A more congenial spot
For top-down management of names than here for a monopolist.

The root's a sort of country club for members
It's very hard indeed to get a spot
    "I'm sorry, i-i-i, that doesn't ... sound right" (a la Rex Harrison)
    Monopoly!
    Monopoly!
    Monopoly!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre
    But for a monopolist
    monopolist
    That's how conditions are.

The staff will never let you build a business
The sun will never shine upon their plans
    In short there's simply not
    A more congenial spot
    For blocking competition in the
    name
    space
    from
    the
    top.
