New gTLDs Afilias Challenge of Last Resort started
posted by michael on Thursday January 17 2002, @09:45AM

SanjeevGoyal writes " Today Afilias declared in its press release that they challenged a first set of domains which were entered in the Sunrise registration with questionable Trademark information."

The important thing is that Afilias did not make the list a public document, but they said that they are taking every possible step to check the Trademark info regarding additional names with the relevant Trademark registries.

But so far Afilias says that they have forwarded a list of only 700 names for challenge. In addition, roughly around 1300 names are being challenged by third parties at WIPO during the process of challenge filing. Even so, that means that to date only about 2000 names have been challenged out of around 10,000 domains which have facialy invalid TM data.

Let us see what comes out of this.

Sanjeev, are you saying that the last couple of pages of challenges posted recently here are not Afilias challenges?

And would you care to comment on the still pending challenge regarding business.info here? Are you saying that that is not an Afilias challenge? TIA. -g

This is a welcome step from Afilias that they are challenging registration that are based on questionable trademark claims.

Some of the sites that must be added to this list are registered by SanjeevGoyal himself such as:

    • business.info
    • india.info
    • and more...

It would be interesting to know if Business Forms, India actually is a company or not...and whether it really does manufacture business band of stationery?

Interestingly SanjeevGoyal who professes this holier-than-thou attitude by claiming he does everything for his clients, has a lot of dubious distinctions to his credit:

Does SanjeevGoyal claim to be the rightful owner of domains like:

    • rajtravels.com
A premier tour operator is india is a potential client for this domain. The site is currently redirected to the original site raj-travels.com
    • reservebankofindia.com
The .com version of India's National Bank!!
    • lycosindia.com
Possibly a candidate for the indian unit of Lycos
    • exciteindia.com
ditto, only that excite has gone bankrupt...tough luck!

These are just a few domains in the pandora's box that SanjeevGoyal holds, but we will keep adding to this list as and when we get some glaring irregularities. We are also checking to see if any registrar or Registry has been unwittingly made a part of this farce. In the meantime, in case anyone wants to help us in exposing this game/racket, they are most welcome to join!

Stay tuned for the next episode of "Lord of the Domains"...

Is it possible that even Afilias Board Member Govinda Leopold has been successfully challenged? So says Richard Henderson. The ongoing Afilias Abomination should be made into a movie, working title: Govinda Goes Hawaii. -g
