New gTLDs New TLDs Flying the .Coop
posted by michael on Wednesday November 28 2001, @07:41AM

dtobias writes "The ICANN agreement for .coop has been signed, so the entry of this TLD into the root should be imminent. The agreement for .aero has been fully posted for over a week now, so its signature may come at any time (I don't know of any formal objections being aired by ICANN board members, despite the debate here and in some other forums over whether the .aero agreement is in accord with its original application). You can see both of these agreements in the ICANN site."

An interesting tidbit from the .coop agreement: In the Additional Covenants section, it says "Sponsor will operate a web site located at http://www.communicate.coop to provide clear information to prospective registrants about registration procedures." However, the list of domain names to be registered to the sponsoring organization does not include communicate.coop. This therefore makes it impossible for the .coop sponsor to follow its agreement with ICANN to the letter -- if they fail to set up a site at communicate.coop, they're breaking the additional covenants, but if they do set up such a site, they're breaking the rule against taking any domains for themselves in .coop that aren't itemized in the agreement.
