Alternate Roots Another Alternative Root TLD .USA slated to bilk the Unskilled Masses

Anonymous writes "Here's an interesting money making scheme...
There is a company marketing the alternative root .usa top level domain, which works with only a 'slight modification to the browser' (according to the www.dotusa.com FAQ).

Let's all set one up... ;)"

The whois information indicates that this immensely patriotic attempt is being operated out of the UK.

[The quoted statement above is all I could find on the site about how this TLD is supposed to work. The failure to make a fuller disclosure as to how this TLD will (and especially will not!) resolve compares poorly with the actions of more ethical alternate root operators, and strikes me as a fairly serious potential problem under the consumer law of many countries. So too does the fairly transparent attempt to cause confusion with the .us domain. Although I'm not a UK lawyer, I wonder what the UK Office of Fair Trading would have to say about it all?-mf]

Yes, and what happens if I register muhhk.usa with you (assuming this to be a commercial advert) and someone else registers muhhk.usa with DotUSA.com?

This is my *Big Problem* with the alternative registrars: that there is insufficient coordination to ensure that SLD's within given TLD's are *not* duplicated (no technical reason why multiple registrars cannot coordinate registrations with a given TLD). This is an absolutely bonkers situation. Think of the chaos if different telephone companies sold the same phone number to different companies or individuals, or if parcel couriers recognised the same address as different places.

ICANN should be the place where this coordination happens. But it's not, for, I suspect, commercial reasons.

PS. All these domains prices seem very high for essentially a handful of lines in a text file. I have seen .co.uk 3LD domains advertised for £8.50 for two years, which is a quite reasonable price.
