LA Times Reports on ENUM Developments
posted by michael on Monday September 03 2001, @08:04AM
The Los Angeles Times has a really good article by Jude Shiver, Jr. on recent developments on ENUM entitled Single-Number Plan Raises Privacy Fears. Notably, the article quotes an Aug. 21 letter from the US Government giving cautious endorsement to ENUM:
"The United States does see merit in pursing discussions regarding implementation of a coordinated, global [system] . . . for ENUM," but, reports the LA Times, the letter also says that aspects of the technology advocated by industry "go beyond what is prudent or necessary."

ENUM remains the sleeping dragon of DNS policy. In its most robust form it could use the DNS to tie together a vast variety of communications devices, and incidentally create a virtual ID number for every user of those communications. The privacy issues are substantial. It's interesting to see major media waking up to this complex story...although it's also interesting to read that AOL and Microsoft are planning to roll out ENUM compliant software.
