Membership Issues a reader on the ALSC meeting in Silicon Valley
posted by jon on Tuesday August 07 2001, @07:12AM

gbroiles writes "The At-Large Study Committee is having a meeting (of some sort) next week at Verisign's new location in Mountain View, CA. I'm planning to attend to see what happens - I'm not 100% up-to-date on the details of ICANN/DNS politics, but if I wait until I know exactly what's going on they won't be meeting on my continent any more."

So, I'm wondering if better-read ICANN watchers have any suggestions for especially interesting or significant things to mention, and/or pay attention to.

I screwed up and went to the meeting location yesterday, instead of next Monday - that was a little embarassing, but it did give me a chance to look around Verisign's new building. (They've taken over the old Netscape offices on Middlefield Road - some of the Netscape signage is still up, but they put temporary Verisign signs over them - at night, the Netscape logos light up underneath the Verisign logos, providing an interesting image expressing compactly the last 6 years of so of Internet bubble history. :)

Of particular interest to me were the two big maps in the entry area showing Verisign space allocation in the new building - there's a lot of space, and not that many people. None of the conference rooms at that location look very big - maybe 40 people max, if I read the floor plan map correctly. So that makes me think they're not expecting a big turnout for the meeting. Is that realistic? I figured more people might show up, given that this is the valley, and there are a bunch of loudmouths (like me) between jobs with time on their hands.

The August 13 ALSC outreach meeting will focus on how to implement our
goal of At-Large (individuals, public interest organizations, etc.)
representation and participation in ICANN. The ALC has issued two
documents that will serve as a basis for our meeting: a "Discussion
Paper #1," (included below) outlining the ALSC's initial thoughts and
soliciting input, and an "option" template posted on our website
http://www.atlargestudy.org/template.shtml ) for your use in commenting
on and formulating specific ideas on "how" ICANN might involve "At-
Large members." The meeting will feature a panel moderated by Dan
Gillmor, Technology Columnist, San Jose Mercury News, to facilitate
audience discussion, and will include all members of the ALSC.
Additional information is available on our website at

All interested individuals are encouraged to participate in this
